What’s New in the Shower? Full Slabs and Invisible Drains

Showers are getting clean - cleanly, that is. We're seeing bigger slabs in the shower, fewer grout lines, and nearly invisible shower drains. Instead of small tiles with heavily grouted shower floors, large marble and granite slabs are what kitchen and bath designers are implementing in today's new bath and shower remodels. We are often seeing slabs of natural stone used on shower walls, but the look is extending to the shower floor as well. One factor driving this trend is the availability of barely visible shower drains from kitchen and bath manufacturers. The look is clean, not easy to clean.

If you are selecting a slab shower base, be aware that wet natural stone can be quite slippery. We recommend choosing a honed finish or having your fabricator place some very small grooves in the slab for traction. Also, depending on the layout and threshold, you may want to consider installing two drains to help drain the water faster.
